What is mysophobia?

Mysophobia is an excessive fear of germs and contamination that can drive repeated washing, cleaning, and avoidance.

Common signs and symptoms

  • Intense worry about dirt, germs, or illness from contact
  • Frequent or prolonged hand washing and cleaning
  • Avoiding public surfaces, handshakes, or shared items
  • Distress when you cannot wash or clean
  • Using barriers like tissues or gloves for everyday tasks

When does it become a phobia?

Good hygiene is healthy. Mysophobia is present when the fear is excessive and time-consuming, and washing or avoidance starts to interfere with daily life. When it includes compulsive rituals, it overlaps with contamination OCD.

Why are people afraid?

Contamination fear often centers on disgust and a sense of never being clean or safe enough. Washing and avoidance reduce anxiety briefly, which reinforces the cycle and makes the fear stronger.

Contamination fears are among the most common themes in anxiety and OCD, and rose in visibility during recent public health events.

What helps

Phobias are among the most treatable conditions, usually through gradual, supported exposure. Learn how phobias are treated, or let Bia build you a personalized plan.
