What is agoraphobia?
Agoraphobia is a fear of situations where escape might be difficult or help unavailable if panic strikes, such as crowds, transport, or being far from home.
Common signs and symptoms
- Avoiding crowds, queues, public transport, or open spaces
- Fear of leaving home alone
- Needing a trusted person to go out
- Panic or dread in places that feel hard to leave
- Shrinking range of places you feel safe
When does it become a phobia?
Occasional discomfort in crowds is normal. Agoraphobia is present when fear leads you to avoid many everyday situations, sometimes to the point of rarely leaving home.
Why are people afraid?
Agoraphobia often develops after panic attacks: you start avoiding places where panic happened or might happen. Avoidance shrinks your world and strengthens the belief that those places are dangerous.
Agoraphobia frequently occurs alongside panic disorder and can become significantly disabling without treatment.
