What is acrophobia?

Acrophobia is an intense fear of heights that can trigger panic on balconies, bridges, ladders, or even looking out of tall windows.

Common signs and symptoms

  • Dizziness, panic, or a frozen feeling when high up
  • Avoiding balconies, stairs, bridges, or glass elevators
  • Gripping railings tightly or refusing to look down
  • A strong urge to get down or back away from edges
  • Anxiety just imagining heights

When does it become a phobia?

A little caution near edges is normal and protective. Acrophobia is present when the fear is intense and leads you to avoid ordinary situations involving any height.

Why are people afraid?

Height fear may stem in part from how the brain balances visual and balance information, plus learned associations. Avoidance prevents you from recalibrating and learning that you are safe.

Fear of heights is one of the most common specific phobias, with a meaningful share of people affected to a degree that limits activities.
