What is trypanophobia?
Trypanophobia is an intense fear of needles and injections that can lead people to delay or avoid important medical care.
Common signs and symptoms
- Strong dread before injections, blood draws, or vaccinations
- Avoiding or postponing medical and dental appointments
- Feeling faint or lightheaded at the thought of needles
- Racing heart, sweating, or panic in the waiting room
- Looking away or needing to lie down for procedures
When does it become a phobia?
Disliking needles is normal. It becomes a phobia when the fear causes you to avoid vaccines, blood tests, or treatment you need, or to endure them with extreme distress.
Why are people afraid?
Needle fear often combines pain memories, a fainting (vasovagal) response, and learned anxiety from earlier procedures. Avoiding needles offers short-term relief but strengthens the fear over time.
Needle fear is very common, affecting a substantial share of adults and an even larger proportion of children, and is a recognized barrier to vaccination.
