What is ophidiophobia?
Ophidiophobia is a marked fear of snakes that triggers anxiety even in situations where encountering one is very unlikely.
Common signs and symptoms
- Panic at the sight of a snake, an image, or a video
- Avoiding hikes, tall grass, zoos, or pet stores
- Intrusive thoughts or nightmares about snakes
- Physical symptoms such as trembling, nausea, or a pounding heart
- Difficulty looking at snakes on screens or in books
When does it become a phobia?
A healthy wariness of snakes is normal and even useful. It becomes a phobia when the fear is disproportionate and leads you to avoid ordinary places or activities just in case a snake might be there.
Why are people afraid?
Like spider fear, snake fear seems partly hardwired: people learn to fear snakes faster than neutral objects. Frightening encounters, stories, and media can strengthen the response, and avoidance prevents the fear from fading.
Fear of snakes is among the most frequently reported fears worldwide, though only a portion of people meet the threshold for a diagnosable phobia.
