What is astraphobia?

Astraphobia is an intense fear of thunder and lightning that can cause significant distress during storms.

Common signs and symptoms

  • Intense anxiety or panic during storms
  • Tracking the weather forecast with dread
  • Seeking shelter in a closet, basement, or under covers
  • Distress at the sound of thunder or flashes of lightning
  • Needing company or reassurance during storms

When does it become a phobia?

Being startled by thunder is normal. Astraphobia is present when storms cause overwhelming fear, constant weather-checking, and behaviors that disrupt daily life.

Why are people afraid?

The sudden, unpredictable, and powerful nature of storms can make them feel threatening. Fear can be learned in childhood and reinforced by avoidance and reassurance-seeking.

Storm fear is common in children and can persist into adulthood, sometimes strongly enough to count as a specific phobia.

What helps

Phobias are among the most treatable conditions, usually through gradual, supported exposure. Learn how phobias are treated, or let Bia build you a personalized plan.
